Winter Walk and Roll Day – Wednesday February 7, 2024

The journey outside is a safe and healthy choice for students and parents. Join the walk and provide your kids with the jumpstart they need to perform better in the classroom! Let’s encourage, educate, and learn together!

Check out some of these ideas Bears:

  • All students can participate in Winter Walk Day! Bussed students walk to their bus stop. Families who need to drive can park five minutes away and walk the rest of the way (find your Drive to 5 Maps here: Blessed Sacrament Parking Map).

  • Use an app on your phone or watch to see how many steps or kilometers you walk. You might be surprised at how far you can go!

  • Dress for the weather! Canadian winters can be cold and the sidewalks and paths can be slippery. Make sure to bundle up and walk with caution.

  • Get your whole family involved! It is always more fun to walk with people

  • Walking outside in cold air can reduce stress, increase serotonin (the happiness hormone), and even though the action may be slower, walking in snow leads to greater heart conditioning and increased endurance over time.

On Wednesday February 7,  we will celebrate this day as a school community:

  • Teachers will be taking students outside for a winter walk, dress for the weather!

  • Too far away to walk to school? Get dropped off a block or two away from school and walk the rest of the way if you can.

  • Are you a bus student? Walk the perimeter of the playground zone at recess for some exercise!

Will you be walking on Winter Walk Day?

Shrove Tuesday/Ash Wednesday/Valentine’s Day Plan

Ash Wednesday (February 14) – Ash Wednesday is a very special day on our liturgical calendar. It marks the start of Lent and is a chance for us to make good choices and sacrifices in order to be better citizens of our world and our Catholic Community. We will have an Ash Wednesday liturgy (including the distribution of Ashes) at 12:45 pm in the school gym. Everyone is Welcome!

Valentine’s Day (**also – February 14th**)/Shrove Tuesday   Because Valentine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday February 13th in the afternoon. This is also the same day as Shrove Tuesday so students will celebrate with pancakes in the morning and Valentine’s treats in the afternoon. A reminder for students to bring their own cutlery for pancakes. We will be supplying paper plates, pancakes and maple syrup (courtesy of parent council).

A special reminder that Valentine’s Cards and/or treats are welcome and will be distributed during the afternoon on the 13th, NOT on the 14th.  (No nut products please).  Please remember that Valentine’s Day is a fun, loving day! We are happy to celebrate our friendships and have the children expressing their care for and friendship with each other on this day.  We encourage the children to be inclusive if they are handing out Valentine cards. We do not want to see any students feeling left out or excluded.

Thank you!

Hold and Secure Lifted

Hello Families,

Today we were directed by the Waterloo Regional Police to place our school in a Hold and Secure. A Hold and Secure keeps our students and staff safe from concerns in the wider community. We operate as business as usual with learning and washroom breaks, but we limit movement throughout the school, and prevent anyone from entering or exiting as per Ministry Policy.

We thank our staff and students for their prompt cooperation, following all safety procedures.

We thank the Waterloo Regional Police for working with our school to keep students and staff safe.

We thank you for your support and understanding as we fully appreciate how concerning it is as parents and guardians to have a school placed in a Hold and Secure.

The Hold and Secure has been lifted.

 Be safe and well,

Blessed Sacrament Staff
