News & Announcements - Pink Shirt DayThe National Pink Shirt Day will be held on Wednesday February 23, 2022. In 2007, Berwick Nova Scotia classmates David Shepherd and Travis Price bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. With that act of kindness, Pink Shirt Day was born. Today our diversity is becoming more visible than ever as people continue to embrace their cultures, identities, and true selves in more open and direct ways;  making the need to Lift Each Other Up and have greater acceptance, respect, and inclusion for everyone so important.

BEAR WEAR DAY will be moved to Friday February 25th

COMMUNITY VACCINATION CLINIC will be held on Sunday February 27th in our school gymnasium from 9:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.   This is a pop up, walk in clinic, thus no appointment is required. Please bring your identification.

Our Domino’s Pizza Fundraiser is back! Make Wednesday Night Pizza Night in March  and help support our school. With every order placed between 10:30 a.m and 9:00 p.m. on March 2, 9, 23 & 30 the school gets a kick back.  Please use the code: SGIVE when you are ordering.  This is for the Max Becker Location.

Lastly our board, as per ministry requirements, is launching the bi annual MDI surveys (Middle Years Development Instrument).  Parents, Staff and Students are invited to participate.  The survey runs from February 22 up until March 11th.  An information letter about this survey was sent out at the beginning of the month.  Here is the link for parents to participate in the survey if you so choose: https://wcdsb.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eA4cEYt2P7ccOW2?school=BSCT

Updates from WCDSB: Transportation, Daily Remote Learning, Daily Screening

TRANSPORTATION

The following message serves to provide an update on student transportation services in the Region of Waterloo.  School bus operators in the Region continue to experience bus driver shortages.  Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) and school bus operators are to working to address driver shortages through modifications to existing bus routes and aggressive recruiting efforts. In some cases buses have been cancelled on a week to week basis.  We recognize this is far from ideal.

Bus Cancellation: buses will be cancelled when the following occurs:

  1. A bus route cannot be serviced up to 40 minutes past its scheduled time.
  2. There is no driver available to service the route.

Families should subscribe to automatic notifications on STSWR’s website to be notified of late buses and cancellations: https://www.stswr.ca/parents/subscription-service-instructions/

Operators are sending out service notifications on a priority basis to support families with their planning.

As we are in the latter stages of winter, families should ensure they monitor weather conditions and make appropriate arrangements to ensure their children are not exposed to severely cold temperatures for extended periods while waiting for a late bus.

Students who cannot get to school when a bus is cancelled should check their Google classroom daily for school work / assignments.

A new cohort of drivers have been hired, trained, and have been assigned to those routes most at risk for cancellation.  Recruitment and training will continue.  If you or anyone you know are be interested in a rewarding career as school bus driver, please visit/share the following site:  https://www.stswr.ca/blog/2021/09/24/drive-a-school-bus/

Please contact STSWR at 519-744-7575 if you require additional information / support.

Respectfully,

Shesh Maharaj, Executive Superintendent, Corporate Services  Waterloo Catholic District School Board

TEMPORARY REMOTE LEARNING:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     The option for students to connect to their classes through Temporary Remote Learning is coming to an end of the Friday, February 18th, 2022.  The option was provided at the request of the board and Ministry of Education while we navigated the high point of the Omicron surge.  We are now a month out from the peak and while the risk of covid is not fully removed, it is far similar to where we were in the fall months.  All students who did not select virtual learning for the full year are now required to return to in person learning.

DAILY SCREENING:  Daily Screening and confirmation by the school remains a provincial requirement.  In our elementary schools we will stop using the paper confirmation form, however students will still be asked to confirm that they have completed the screening with you at home.  It is extremely important that no student comes to school not having completed their screening at home.

Twoonies for Nutrition for Learning

Dear Families

A card will be coming home with students to assist with the Nutrition for Learning Campaign.

Nutrition for Learning is a free program that our school uses and provides nutritious snacks for students. It is a program that is very well used at school.

To help support this program, they have asked us to participate in a twoonie program, where you can tape a twoonie to the card and return to school.

You can also make a donation via etransfer if you wish.  We are running our school campaign from Feb 14 – 28.

Thank you for your support of this worthy cause.

St. Valentine’s Day on Monday

Dear Families

We want to communicate that last night we received communication from the Assistant Medical Officer of Health in regards to the distribution and sharing of Valentine’s Cards on Monday.

Given what we know about low risk from fomite transmission I think it’s ok to allow this. Would recommend they encourage good practices such as washing hands before and after touching/handling anything that is given to them by someone else. Also the delivery methods should include proper IPAC protocols like distancing/masking so students are not coming into close contact with each other.

As such, we will allow Valentine’s Cards to be shared with classmates.  We will do so in a safe manner as outlined above.  If you require a list of names (first names only) of students in the class to make the cards, please contact your homeroom teacher. Thank you

Tech Meets Parenting: A Balancing Act

Dear Families

The following is a message about an upcoming event sponsored by the Catholic Community Foundation of Waterloo Region.

It is no secret that we are changing the world with technology. Technology has provided tools for our world to stay connected and a platform to learn beyond our physical borders. It can enrich everyday experiences and has led to advancements that have increased our overall productivity, efficiency, and quality of life. At work, school, or
home, technology has become an important tool that has been woven into our daily lives. When technology is used improperly or in excess, it can also be detrimental to the user, their family, and the community. Understanding this potential risk, it is important to developing skills to properly manage our use of technology.

Our children have grown up with technology at their fingertips, so leading by example and setting boundaries is more important than ever. In many ways, guiding your children now means helping them along in the real world, as well as in the digital world. While they will need to learn healthy habits around using technology to be balanced, successful digital citizens – we as parents can probably benefit from a few pointers ourselves!

Join us on Thursday, February 24 at 7:00 pm EST for a virtual family-focused event that will explore our relationship with technology. We will discuss the importance of and tactics around being a good role model and setting boundaries at all ages.
